DOT (Department of Transportation) standards establish minimum performance requirements for helmets, the purpose of which is to reduce deaths and injuries resulting from head impacts.

DOT tests every aspect of a helmet-from impact attenuation to the retention system. They also offer guidelines on labeling, month and year of manufacture, and identifying the types of materials used for the shell and liner.
