FAQs

A helmet is a very important purchase, and one that requires some research. We've tried to list some of the most important questions here. If you have any others, don't hesitate to contact us.

Q: How long can a helmet last?
A: Since Xpeed helmets are made with the finest materials, they will last for quite a long time. However, because helmets are used in a wide variety of conditions, it is impossible to say exactly how long they will last. Due to UV damage, adhesive and component aging and other factors, we recommend purchasing a new helmet (Xpeed, of course) every 3 to 5 years.

However, your helmet should be replaced immediately if:
  • It has suffered an impact. An impact may fracture the outer shell or compress the impact absorbing liner. And much of the time, you may not be able to detect the damage.
  • The shell, impact absorbing lining, or retention system has been damaged. Wearing a damaged helmet may increase your risk of serious injury or death in an accident.

If you are unsure whether or not you need to replace your helmet, contact Xpeed America before continuing to wear it.

Q: My helmet takes care of me; how do I take care of it?
A: There are several ways.

Shell Cleaning
Use only approved methods for cleaning your helmet. Using unapproved methods/chemicals may damage the shell or lining and that, in turn, may increase your risk of serious injury or death in the event of an accident.

Glossy Finish
Since Xpeed helmets incorporate an automotive-type base coat/clear coat, we recommend using products specifically designed for automotive cleaning and polishing.

  • Inexpensive rubbing compounds can be used for deep cleaning to remove many scratches and scuffs. But be careful: Over-polishing can cause light abrasion that may dull the helmet's finish.
  • When stickers and decals are removed from a helmet, they leave an adhesive residue. To remove it, use alcohol swabs and immediately wipe away any excess liquid, and clean the area with soap and water once the residue is removed. Do not use excessive pressure while rubbing; instead, use multiple light treatments.

Non-Glossy Finish
For our "flat" (non-glossy) helmets, warm water and mild soap are the best way to clean. For heavier dirt use multiple treatments, but don't use excessive pressure or rubbing compounds while cleaning the surface; they can give it a glossy effect that ruins the finish.

Interior Cleaning
Although we recommend buying a new helmet every 3 to 5 years, the accumulation of sweat, humidity, and dirt can deteriorate the fabric and stitching which can give it an unpleasant odor.

  • To wash the removable pads, we recommend regular machine washing and air drying. For non-removable interiors, bacteria and mild eliminating products such as "Helmet Fresh" work well.

Vent Cleaning
Dirt and debris can find their way into the venting of a helmet. Compressed air cans used for cleaning computer keyboards are effective at blowing away the debris. We recommend that you remove any removable pads before performing this process.

Replacement Parts
Using replacement parts not manufactured by us may increase the risk of serious injury or death in the event of an accident. It's important that you use only Xpeed parts specifically designed to work with this helmet.

Do Not Modify Your Helmet
Although you may be tempted to modify your helmet, it is not a good idea. Xpeed helmets are designed to meet stringent SNELL and DOT requirements. Modifying them may increase your risk of serious injury or death in an accident.

Modifications include:
  • Drilling holes
  • Cutting the shell, liner or strap
  • Altering the retention system, including adding a chin cup
  • Painting
  • Attaching accessories not manufactured by Xpeed

If you have any questions about modifications-or about SNELL or DOT standards-please email us.

Storing Your Helmet

  • An improperly stored helmet can become damaged and may increase your risk of serious injury or death in an accident. You should:

    • Store the helmet in a cool dry place
    • Keep the helmet away from pets and other animals
    • Keep it away from heat in excess of 122 degrees F and do not set on or near hot surfaces.

Q: How do I properly attach and close my shield so that it stays closed?
A: The most common reason for the shield flipping up is that it has been removed or changed and then re-installed improperly. To verify this, make sure the shield tab is under the channel on the shield-based plate.

If the tab is under the channel on both sides, it is possible that the actual base plate position needs to be adjusted. Loosening the base plate screws and moving both base plates backward increases the closed tension between the shield and the eyeport gasket--increasing the strength of the shield in full closed position. Be sure not to over tighten the base plate screws.

Q: How do I identify my helmet versus somebody else's?
A: There are a few important things to look for.

    1 - Snell Certification
Serial letters/numbers required for warranty registration.

    2 - Model Designation
Located on back of helmet shell.

    3 - Warranty
Important information about helmet construction and cleaning.

    4 - Date of Manufacture
The warranty and date information can be found on your chinstrap or on the sewn in label tag on some models
